What We Need, When We Need It Most

I often think that life is filled with “divine appointments”. As we go about our days, the places we visit, the people we meet, the paths we cross, you never know the importance it all can make in someone’s life. A simple smile, a kind word of encouragement, or a short conversation can make a world of difference.  Times are hard for many, and every day, in each moment, we have an opportunity to make things a little brighter.

We recently visited a disabled woman without transportation, and took her some much-needed supplies. What started as a simple delivery turned into a beautiful exchange of sharing about life, listening, learning, understanding, and connection. As I listened, I learned about the great loss she had experienced of her parents and loved ones, and the feeling of being all alone. What seemed like simple items to me meant everything to her, and the conversation, I think, meant even more. That trip wasn’t just about providing material support, food, and essentials, but a lifeline of compassion and now friendship.

I believe this is how we build healthy communities based on the foundation of love and compassion for those around us.  I believe there are no “chance meetings”, because a lot of times we see that we become at that moment exactly what someone needed. Those words spoken, that listening ear, the warm blanket, and pjs, the food box, it’s more than that.  It goes even deeper. That depth is what brings us back to the root of love and growth into a better life for us all. In these times of charity, we experience a mutual exchange of giving that nurtures our souls and reminds us of what’s important.

I know there is a lot of negativity going on in the world around us right now. We seem to be bombarded with it. I would encourage you to take the time for yourself and for others that you encounter each day. Everyone has a story, including you, and there’s a need for compassion and understanding. I want to encourage you and let you know that you matter, and the things you have gone through, the obstacles you’ve overcome, the lessons you’ve learned, they all matter. Care and share with others. Your story is valuable, along with your input, wisdom, gifts, and talents, and many can benefit from your contribution.  You might just find that at that very moment, it was exactly what was needed.
